3 young men facing cocaine charges in White Plains

With every crime comes a penalty, and while penalties differ depending upon the severity of the offense, no punishment is a walk in the park. Drug crimes, in particular, are harshly penalized and aggressively prosecuted. A conviction on drug charges can result in jail time, probation, fines and being barred from certain kinds of employment.

This information may be useful for an 18-year-old from White Plains who was arrested recently on drug charges.

Officers in White Plains claimed they spotted four men standing near a dumpster late at night. The police report says that one officer witnessed the four men dumping white powder from a Ziploc bag onto the backs of their hands. Exactly how close the officer was to the young men was not made clear in a local news report. Given that the suspects were seen at about 1:00 a.m., it isn't unfeasible to assume that visibility may have been low in the darkness near the dumpster.

One of the officers apparently approached the young men, and two of them were said to have run away while the 18-year-old from White Plains and one other stayed behind. The two men still at the scene were arrested, and one of the others, a 19-year-old from Elmsford, was eventually apprehended.

The officers claim they found cocaine, of which there was a total of .44 grams (a very small amount). The three men were charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, which is considered a class A misdemeanor.

No matter the situation, drug charges should not ruin a young person's future. Moreover, police officers do make mistakes, and it simply would not be fair for anyone, no matter his or her age, to go to jail based on badly obtained or faulty evidence. New York residents who have been accused of drug crimes should take the necessary legal steps to protect their rights and freedom.
