A New York man was recently arrested for allegedly attacking an ex-girlfriend at his home. The man allegedly bit the woman’s lip, broke her left hand, and choked her. The man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and domestic violence. The woman was apparently at the man’s home visiting his family when the alleged incident occurred. The man allegedly attempted to strangle the woman with his hands, and family members transported the woman to the emergency room, where hospital personnel called the police after seeing signs of strangulation on the woman’s neck. The man is currently in custody awaiting his first court appearance.
Domestic violence is a very tough problem to deal with in a person’s life, because it involves matters of the most intimate and personal nature. It can cause intense physical as well as emotional trauma to the victim, simply because the aggressor is a person’s spouse or loved one. The violence can increase or become fatal without warning, so it puts the victim in extreme personal danger. However, due to the personal nature of the problem, it can be difficult for victims to seek the help they need.
Fortunately, victims of domestic abuse in New York have several means of legal recourse. They can file divorce actions against their abuser and seek restraining orders in order to protect their physical safety. They can also obtain counseling for any emotional problems associated with the abuse.
Victims of domestic violence are entitled to a just recourse against their abuser. They have the right to a divorce or a separation if they choose, and they are entitled to press criminal charges against their abuser and to have him or her be tried by the criminal justice system. Any victim of domestic violence is entitled to a legal remedy.
