New York enacts tough new law against domestic violence

Recently, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that increases the penalties for domestic abuse offenses. Repeated instances of domestic violence are no longer considered misdemeanors, but instead are felonies. Also, the new legislation requires that judges consider more risks that the defendant poses before setting bail. This fixes the problem of domestic assault perpetrators getting a low bail, which would allow them the chance to abuse the victim again before trial.

New York man allegedly pulls gun while getting gas

Police in New York City recently arrested a 35-year-old Queens man for allegedly pulling out a gun while in line to get gas. The alleged violent crime occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which prevented the delivery of fuel to the affected area, leading to gas shortages. The man had allegedly tried to cut in line and pointed a gun at another motorist who had complained about his behavior. Authorities arrested the man and charged him with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

New York seeks to revamp white-collar laws

Recently, the New York District Attorneys Association formed a task force dedicated to reforming the state's laws against white collar crime. The task force will be comprised of 23 people, with both prosecutors and defense attorneys represented. The task force will recommend new legislation to close loopholes in laws against white collar crime, and to increase sentences for fraud, corruption and other felonies. Federal law is generally considered to be tougher on white collar crime than the laws of the states, and the task force convened by the DA's association is an attempt to remedy this. The ultimate aim of the task force is to modernize New York's laws and to bring them more in line with federal law.
