Two Saugerties, New York, residents have been arrested on drug and firearm charges following local law enforcement officers’ discoveries of more than 100 bags of heroin and illegal firearms.

A local news organization reports that the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement Narcotics team received a tip that concealed weapons and drugs were being sold on Burnet Road near West Saugerties. A search warrant led police to a house where they discovered a sawed-off shotgun, a rifle, bags of heroin, and electronic scales and other drug-related paraphernalia.

Two people — a 20-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man– were charged with possession of weapons and possession of controlled substance, misdemeanor. They were also charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of weapon, felonies.

Although gun ownership is legal throughout the country, there are certain restrictions that vary from state to state on the type of firearms that can be owned and how they can be modified. Anyone who has been convicted of a violent crime or of possession of drugs or prohibited substances is prohibited from owning guns. Even aliens are prohibited from owning guns.

In this case, the pair’s freedom is in jeopardy due to the numerous charges pressed. The suspects will undoubtedly soon understand the severity of the charges pressed against them and explore possible defense strategies that can help their cases.

To establish a strong defense, the suspects should consider seeking help from experienced legal professionals who can navigate the legal system. Anyone under suspicion of a violent crime involving the use of a firearm should consider discussing the case with a legal professional.

The best legal defense is a strong offense. Arming oneself with the right knowledge for a credible criminal defense may be the best way to deal with firearm charges either by proving a defendant’s innocence or getting a case dismissed.
