Understanding the dangers involved with distracted driving

Due to our busy lives, we all tend to tackle more than one thing at a time. Multi-tasking has become survival mode for many, but it is not something that should be done in all environments. Take texting for example. It is perfectly safe to do while you are at home cooking, at work checking emails and at the store while you are shopping. However, it is not something you should do while you are driving. Multitasking behind the wheel can put a driver, their passengers and other travelers on or near the roadway at risk.

Distracted driving is a growing concern. Even though many campaigns exist that attempt to deter and reduce the number of drivers that drive distracted, many still do it. Maybe they think that they can handle it better or are not just another statistic. The truth of the matter is that no one is good at distracted driving and everyone that drives distracted is at risk of being involved in a serious automobile accident.

Current statistics claim that over eight people are killed and another 1,161 injured every single day in a crash caused by a distracted driver. According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, 2015 had a total of 3,477 people killed and 391,000 people injured in crashes involving a distracted driver. The National Occupant Protection Use Survey found that the highest rate of cellphone use while driving was among those between the ages of 16 and 24.

Although statistics and campaigns are used to reduce the number of distracted drivers on the road, this does not mean drivers will stop this bad behavior. Anyone injured in a distracted driving accident should understand that they have rights and legal recourses. This includes filing a personal injury action in order to hold a negligent driver accountable and collect compensation for losses and damages.
